Andy Golightly from Bolton in Lancashire took part in this years Marathon in what is certainly not a wheelchair friendly couse and in windy conditions. Despite all the dificulties Andy clocked a very creditable 2:50:04.
Andy is a member of the BWRA (British Wheelchair Racing Association) and was hoping to complete the course in around 2hrs 45mins but windy condition on parts of the course prevented this. Andy works with BASIC (Brain and Spinal Injury Centre) on a vocational project as a Travel Trainer. Please see:- www.basiccharity.org.uk for more details
Last year Andy raised £3000 for BASIC by doing 11 races, including 5 Half Marathons, a Full Marathon and a 44-mile push.
Andy says:-
"The reason I am raising money for BASIC is that six years ago, BASIC played a key role in helping me come to terms with my new life as a wheelchair user by giving me the confidence to try new things. They continue to help people and their families following a traumatic brain injury or neurological diagnosis by offering a variety of services, including: information and education; emotional support; back to work advice; an assisted exercise suite; complementary therapies; training courses; and social activities. BASIC clients come from all walks of life and from right across the North West of England, as well as further afield."
BASIC is a registered charity that is heavily reliant on voluntary donations and grants. "This year I plan to enter the Flora London Marathon, BUPA Great Manchester Run, Blackpool Marathon, Mablethorpe Marathon and BUPA Great North Run – all for BASIC".
